trench coat: a timeless trend

trench coat: a timeless trend

the trench coat is one of those creation that transcends time. it's an essential piece in any wardrobe, and although it comes in a variety of styles, colors, lengths and with more or less traditional details, it remains an indispensable classic.

responsible for its invention and success, the trench coat is forever associated with the burberry brand. the origins of the trench coat date back to the 1820s, when macintosh and hancock created waterproof fabrics for outdoor and military use. in 1853, a tailor named john emery created a version of the raincoat - "aquascutum". but it wasn't until 1856 that thomas burberry developed the definitive "gabardine" fabric, which made cotton and wool fibers waterproof. never before has a waterproof fabric been so breathable and comfortable.

the innovative fabric became popular with adventurers and explorers, and was used on several polar expeditions. with the outbreak of world war I, the model became popular among officers. the name itself comes from this popular use and was first used in a newspaper in 1916.  deep pockets for flasks, maps or grenades, flaps for extra chest protection, raised collars to protect against poisonous gases and tight khaki-colored cuffs for camouflage were all practical features of this model.

it was quickly adopted by civilian men and women as a symbol of patriotism and social status. hollywood associated it with glamour and romance; after all, sex symbols like humphrey bogart in casablanca and audrey hepburn in breakfast at tiffany's wore trench coats.

more than a century later, the trench coat is just as trendy, with all kinds of brands and segments selling it, and it's a part of most men's and women's wardrobes. it transcends the trend, although it remains trendy, versatile and practical, it can be worn with t-shirts and jeans or with dresses and suits.
