must watch on tv

with the writers' strike still going on, it's only natural that new seasons of our favorite shows are being delayed, as are new premieres.

luckily for us viewers, there are still plenty of excellent options available, and this is the time to catch up on the shows that we may have missed. if you really need some suggestions to fill your evenings, here are a few.

— DAISY JONES AND THE SIX

for those like me who have read the book, this premiere was eagerly awaited, and the adaptation of taylor jenkins reid's bestseller seems perfect for television.

the (fictional) story of the end of a legendary rock'n'roll band - the six - is told in a nostalgic interview format with the various members of the band. years after their demise, each reflects on the reasons that led to their breakup. and, of course, the tumultuous love triangle between lead singers billy (sam claflin) and daisy (riley keough) and billy's wife camila (camila morrone).

to capture the musical atmosphere of the 1970s, the series also features 25 original songs produced by blake mills and written in collaboration with artists such as phoebe bridgers, marcus mumford, jackson browne, madison cunningham and chris weisman.

if you've seen it and you like the genre (although it's more unlikely you haven't), my pick would be normal people. with enough drama to move even the most insensitive, daisy and connell will steal a little bit of your heart.

— SAS ROGUE HEROES

if you were a fan of peaky blinders (like me!!), this series is a must-see. from the creator, steven knight's, sas: rogue heroes is the barely believable, but apparently based on true events (as indicated in ben macintyre's book of the same name), adventure of the formation of a special unit (special air service) to stop the advance of nazi troops in north africa.

the story is as heroic as it is absurd, but it never fails to fascinate. the characters are unafraid of violence, and the anachronistic soundtrack follows suit, with bands like ac/dc, black sabbath, and the clash making appearances alongside wartime tunes.

the cast includes connor swindells, jack o'connell, alife allen, dominic west and sofia boutella.

and of course, if you loved the sas rogue heroes but never saw peaky blinders... this will be the most obvious choice. and you won't regret it!

— BLACK MIRROR

season 6 recently premiered for those who have been following this brilliant sci-fi series. but if you have never seen it... you have 6 incredible seasons to catch up.

as creator charlie brooker wrote when the show premiered on channel 4 in 2011, "the 'black mirror' of the title is the one you find on every wall, on every desk, in the palm of every hand: the cold, shiny screen of a TV, a monitor, a smartphone." we look, hoping to see ourselves, but the reflection we receive is filtered by technology is empty, just like us.

inspired by the twilight zone, black mirror focuses on themes of futuristic technology, scientific change, and what can happen between members of society when technology becomes too powerful. the tone is almost always dark, with endings that can make you feel sick.

features special guest appearances by major tv and movie stars. just to name a few: jon hamm, michael cera, bryce dallas howard, salama hayek pinault or josh hartnett.

and if you like this genre and have seen all the episodes... my choice would be the handmaids tale. one of my favorite series ever.

— THE DIPLOMAT

I've been following keri russell's career since she was the cute girl in felicity, so when this series premiered, it was immediately on my list.

the diplomat, as the name suggests, revolves around the us ambassador to great britain - kate wyler.  a former career foreign service officer accustomed to working in crisis zones, that is suddenly sent to serve in london when a crisis that could lead to war escalates.

at her post in london, her staff is up in arms about politics, policy, and... her clothes and makeup. as kate wyler tries her best to rein in the populist british prime minister (rory kinnear), while seeking support from the foreign secretary (david gyasi) and avoid general political interference from her husband (rufus sewell).

netflix has already confirmed that the show has been renewed for a second season.

and if, by the end of the day, you're craving another series of political intrigue. the americans, also with keri russell, is a great choice. there are 6 seasons that you shouldn't miss.
